I think that literary books and today’s popular genre fiction books should be interchangeable. I think they all convey a message that could be taught in schools. Putting them in two separate categories confuses me, since the authors all wrote for a similar purpose: trying to spread a message through a story. Now, I personally love the classics, but I also enjoy picking up the latest and greatest at Barnes & Noble after school. I don’t find it fair to today’s authors that we don’t read their novels in school. Fair would be having an even divide between literary classics and popular genre fiction novels. And, I think, this would interest more students to explore the wonderful world of books because most of us only know what’s required to read.
In a perfect world, teenagers would want to read literary classics. I think a lot of why we don’t [want to read] now is because it’s something we’re forced to do. Maybe if we were given options, or a wider variety of books, it would be more fascinating. But just handing us a book and telling us when it’s due makes it seem like a chore, which reading shouldn’t be. Reading should open your mind to ideas you’d never imagined. It should help you learn lessons and feel new emotions, gain tools that will help you succeed in life. It’s important that we read a variety of books, of different genres, to expand the small amount of knowledge we have now. Kids should want to read because they want to help themselves. If you don’t want to help yourself, well, good luck.
I agree that there should be an equal amount of genre fiction and literary fiction taught in schools. Kids might actually want to read if English class was run this way.
ReplyDeleteI agree that alot of kids don't like reading the classices because it is something they are forced to do and may be about something that doesn't interest them, it would help to give kids a choice.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy reading some of the classics too, but being forced to read something takes away from the enjoyment. I agree with how you said that we should have an equal amount of genre fiction and literary fiction.
ReplyDeleteI think that we dont read genre fiction in school because it is so easy to just pick up after school to read on your own. Keep the literary classics because if we dont, they will be lost.
ReplyDeleteWhy in a perfect world? Why couldn't it happen in this world? Things could change in our lifetime.
ReplyDeleteI definitely think that if school is going to teach literary classics, then they should also relieve us with a breath of fresh air by teaching newer books.
ReplyDeleteI understand a lot of your ideas but i think you contradict yourself. You say that by telling a kid when a book is due then you make it a chore. How would that be any different with genre fiction? If you want to merge the two like you suggest you automatically are changing kids mindsets. Instead of being excited to read the hunger games in class its something you've done a hundred times and dread just as much as the lord of the flies.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that classic and modern novels should be more closely grouped together than they are now. Also, I agree that we're not giving present day authors enough credit for what they write, kind of saying they aren't good enough to be read in the classroom.
ReplyDeleteyeah the books should be interchangeable. If I was given options I would want to read more too.
ReplyDeleteI agree that with the two different categories it can get confusing, but don't you think that once we bring in book you loved into school and start ripping them apart that it'll ruin the book?
ReplyDeleteI like your comparison between being given a book to read and a chore. I agree that “school books” can be like that.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that books should open your mind, however I disagree that Literary classics can be interchangeable with Genre fiction books, because Literary books are supposed to teach you about theme and symbolism however genre fiction books don't do much of anything to learn from in an actual English class.
ReplyDeleteI agree that maybe if we were given the option to read the literary books and not forced to, maybe more of us would want to read them.
ReplyDeleteI agree that we would like reading more if we were given a variety of books. But I disagree that genre fiction and literary books are interchangable. I think they both have different goals in mind and different audiences. One aims to teach and enlighten while the other is there for entertainment and to relate.
ReplyDeleteI don't really agreee, some of the classics could be switched out with genre fiction. The classics that i've read this year have taken the fun out of reading and I honestly haven't leard anything that I didn't know already.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the comment that says that if we don't read literary books in school, we won't ever read them. They have to be forced on us or else they won't be read.
